Older people who quit their moderate smoking habit reduced their cigarette-associated cardiovascular risks to the level seen people who had never smoked in as little as 8 years, according to a prospective population study presented at the American Heart Association’s annual scientific sessions. And this risk reversal occurred much sooner than the 15 years predicted in a 2004 report by the U.S. Surgeon General.
